Here is an article from John Wolf:July 2010 Pen Jabs Meeting

Gathering of writers and editors of the Pen Jabs at Balboa Park

July10

Mary Prokops, Pauline Hagar, Larry Edwards, Linda Meckler, and LinDee Rochelle gathered next to the Pappion Club next to us at the Japanese Pavilian in Balboa Park. This was a great gab session. We didn't really get into any new material. We discussed the SD Writers Guild meeting on Monday. I discussed the experience with talking to film makers at a meeting on Tuesday night. LinDee filled us in on Infinity Publishing's plan to provide eBooks. I told the group about the last episode of The Writer's Loft where we interviewed a lawyer and he disspelled many myths that fall under the term "fail use." It turns out that fair use is a defense used during a trial, but there are no fair use list of items allowed. When in doubt, get permission from individuals or companies to use material for books. Locations, trademark item are not defendable. Trademarks are not to protect the owner, but to inform the public, so their use in not a copyright conflict at all.

There was a lengthy discussion on ISBN numbers - how to get them, how to use them. It seems there are companies now that provide ISBNs for ebooks you want to get online, but aren't published anywhere else, so there is no ISBN establish, which presvents uploading to Kindle for instance.

I talked about my article in the August F&Q focused on book covers. This is an area we all need to reaccess from the information I present there to realize more impact and reader capture can be accomplished with clever concept thinking.

More autor conferences are coming up and Infinity is going to sponsor folks that normally can't make the trip to Pennsylvania due to costs. I know I put in my application!
