Hi Susan,
Very nice essay, Sue! Touching, sincere, wise, and true. Especially about the value of respect. I couldn't agree with you more. It appears that "respect" is only a word anymore, no longer an attitude that one holds toward others, or even toward oneself. In our government, for instance, it appears that respect has been replaced by bombast, mudslinging, and power struggles. What a sad state we've fallen into. Mankind as a whole has such a high potential but it seems always to strive for the lowest common denominator. Thanks for sharing your Chugach journey with us, and for sharing your thoughts as well.

Hi Susan,
How can being politically correct be so incorrect? I guess the reason we don't know about the pristine places on earth is they are so far away, or out of the way, or just in the way. The wondering soul doesn't mix well with the city dweller driven by greed. Pines reflecting on still ponds is boring to the empire builder. Oil and water. Glad you had the opportunity to recharge your soul. Pity the exhaust sucking fool in the city.

Susan,
I can undertand the culture shock you experienced arriving at the Saratosa airport upon your return from Alaska. Although you were only gone for one month, it doesn't take long to enjoy the LACK of noise, rude people bumping into you while milling for their luggage, or breathing in exhaust spewing from shuttle buses and sirens blaring. Ugh! I went through the same culture shock when I returned from Japan after 2 1/2 years living abroad. As for respect or lack of it, I am shocked when a young person politely allows me to go first. Maybe there's hope after all!
Thanks for your travelogue.

Sue,
My apologies for not reading this essay sooner. Your heartfelt words about Alaska ring true with all that I've ever heard from those who have stayed awhile in this incredible other world. You visited at the right time and in the right way - treading the ground. You felt the magic of this nearly unspoiled land and transferred it to me. And you brought all of us back to the harsh reality of our lives when you touched down in Sarasota. If I once thought of Sarasota as some sort of magical kingdom in the sun, I can no longer do so.
