Responses for ~ Russ's Teachings
"Suspense Writing-Conflict"

Excellent lesson, Russ! And who better to teach than you! No wonder you were so successful in your workshop endeavor with John Regh. You would be great at teaching the elements of mystery writing. I wish you would do this series for the group. Did you consider that at all? No wonder, too, that Jack is so pleased with your contributions to his fine 'rag sheet' as he calls it.:) I'm so glad to have you to work with in the FWA. And also for a friend.

Best,
Susan Haley

Aye Captain, it was the rum that made me cut the lines and cast us adrift. I to watch in dispair as our good ship slips beyond the horizon. What do we do now, my mateies?

Ah, a good conflict always gives a story oomph.

Russ Heitz knows the ins and outs of suspense novel writing. His books, Crosshairs and Dying In Deer Country are excellent examples of the techniques he espouses. His books kept me on the edge of my seat cover to cover. When one can't wait to turn the next page of a book, the author has done his job very well. Russ is the author I'm speaking of.

Russ, thanks so much for your "Suspense Writing". You certainly got it right. Although we all know conflict is one of the major elements in a story, not everyone gets it right. I've read some pretty boring books. Looking forward to your next chapter.

Russ,

Thanks for reminding me about the necessity of developing and pointing up the conflicts in a story. I have read your work and you carry this out to a "T." We would all be better writers if we applied your words to the natural conflicts in our stories, clarifying each conflict to the reader - whether, as the case may be, they resolve in favor of our hero, or not.
