Marj,
One of good things about growing up in a rural area where you invent your
fun is you learn that you have to keep doing things to keep out of the abyss.
I never spent much idle time sitting around.
You mentioned a couple of jolts in your life that warned of limited time to do the important things in life. I have a fatalist attitude and am always afraid of running out of time. When will my first stroke hit, will a car accident end my musical and writing abilities? I look for alternative to the life I so enjoy now, wanting to gain tolerance in say, just lying there with only the able to listen to music and not being able to play it. It's the real impending doom of old age that motivates me, much to the chagrin of my family. I'm always busy doing my thing and not taking time to set at the beach or go camping, which I consider a waste of life.
I don't scurry around like a scalded rat. I take my time and often am slow to accomplish anything useful, but I'm always going in a positive direction with goals in mind. I think some of most stable people in the world are the absent minded blokes that muddle along without a care, doing what makes them happy no matter how silly it might be, it's still their thing. They don't stop to smell the roses. They're to busy stomping through them, oblivious to any damage left behind. They simple don't notice.
I really enjoyed reading your article.
