Hi Joe,
It's all about networking. I heard what your writing. If it makes you feel any better, if the F&Q had an income, I would gladly share with the contributors. That would really be cool. But, how can I get guaranteed income. The one thing about a paper product, money has to hit the counter before one can walk away with your article. That's still works. But this new electronic media where a billion people can potential find out who you are...I would say you're nuts if you don't write for free everywhere there's an electronci billboard to take your stuff.

Hello Joe
Welcome to the Fox and Quill. Perhaps, you've contributed here before and I missed it. I found your article interesting, humerous, as well as informative. As one who does about half, and sometimes more of my work gratis in the form of submissions to publications like this, columns, and book reviews, I felt the need to comment.
Mostly, I do it for F&Q because I admire Jack Wolf and like to help him out as he spends a tremendous amount of time offering authors a stage of sorts to spotlight their work, also gratis on his part. This is also true of Dahris Clair, who is the editor and founder of The Infinite Writer.
I've met many friends and received support from them in their buying of my books in doing stuff like this. It gives one a chance to share and it gives others a chance to read your work who might otherwise not ever see it.
I also do four book reviews a month and, again, I'm often rewarded by those authors buying my books as a way of supporting and thanking me for supporting them. Those of us who are Infinity Publishing authors all seem to have adopted the 'authors helping authors' and 'writers helping writers' mindsets years ago.
Although, I am paid for the editing work I do, my own book sales, of course, and the workshops I present, I get great joy out of working with and helping other writers and have made dear and life long friends in my associations with other Infinity authors, in a volunteer role as Chapter Leader for Florida Writers Association, book reviewer, and columnist. Even my website is kept non-commercial and is for inspiration only because it makes me feel happy. I think that is why many of us do it as frequently as we do.
You, too, seem to share that often you get back what you put out even if that is no more than a good feeling. It simply can't be ALL about money. That is what got this country in the mess that it's in now. There are so many other ways to receive compensation in life. Isn't what we are all really seeking a feeling of contentment and a sense of accomplishment? That's my humble opinion, anyway. You seem to have done that with your career.
Congratulations!
Susan Haley
