Cheryl,
I'm not sure why writers think that all they do is the writing, drop a manuscript in the mail, and royalty checks start coming in at the beginning of each month thereafter. Your advice is well taken, by me at least.
Maybe the difficulty comes from that fact a book is a box of mysteries, hidden in the pages, buried in the text. You can't see what's inside ready apparent, and this makes it tough to evaluate. You have to read it, study it, and then it can be value measured against a market. This all evolves a lengthy process where the editor earns his pay.
The author has to become widely known for the sales to even begin. He becomes a circus clown for all intensive purposes to promote the book.
