Memories are made of this: two-tone Chevy Belairs, traveling along route 66, Tommy Dorsey's swing band, teenage love at the drive-in. . . oh, my, I wasn't expecting it to end like this. You faked me out John!
Good read.

It's a short story - how was I to keep it short...? All good things come to an end, but with Charlie, he actually spanned space and time and joined his princess.

Before air-conditioned automobiles, we began our vacation journeys from the California San Joaquin Valley to the Midwest at 2 p.m. We left the green of grape vineyards behind and crossed the Mojave in the moonlight. We laughed at the Burma Shave signs and roadrunners. We were awed by the Painted Desert. We ate picnic lunches in rest-stop shade along Route 66 through Arizona and New Mexico. We endured a flash flood in Texas. We swatted flies in Oklahoma. We visited family in Missouri and returned by a northern route with views of cornfields, sunflowers, and mountains. Salt Lake and the Bonneville Salt Flats were the highlight of the return journey. Half century later, no photos, no memorabilia. Nostalgia is all that remains from those trips. It’s all I need to bond me to Charlie’s time machine.

Thanks Vi for the comment... I to traveled the Mother Road in 1951 from Los Angeles to Albuquerque. My dad had to get back to New Mexico and away from crowds. We ended up in Roswell, NM.

Thanks Jack for the wonderful time machine article. It really took me back. I had a 1957 yellow convertible Chevy. With the top down, two friends and I drove to Yosemite once, and the views were magnificent. I would love to have the car back. It would be worth a small fortune, but I traded it for a 1960 Chrysler four door.
When I drove cross country in 1951 in my Studebaker Starlight, I took the southern route through Texas. It was a delightful trip. The people were friendly. The living was laid back and easy.
These days, the younger generation doesn't know what we are talking about. They are in a hurry to text someone and rush to the next place on their oversuffed agenda!
Great title for a good idea.
