The Very Core of Me
by Susna Haley
Why? Why are you so insatiable?
Do you ever fill, pause to give thanks?
Is there never an end to your multiplying?
Cannot you see, comprehend what you do?
Are you even conscious of self?
Does not the bleeding, the wounds,
the ugly scars of abuse, the desolation of violation
gift you with eyes and ears
that see and hear my rumblings?
Have you no understanding? Awareness?
Are you even alive of flesh?
Do you think you save yourself
when you poison the vermin of your garden?
When you trample the magnificence of mine?
You slaughter and annihilate my children
as you judge who and what
are worthy of your favor, but . . .
Your vermin ARE my children!
I offer you breath
from the lungs of my trees.
My sun-warmth from the cold of darkness.
Water to quench your thirst,
fish and fodder for your nourishment.
I share with you, my currents
with a gentle breeze upon your cheek.
I share with you
the minerals of my structure,
yet you dig, probe into my caverns until I collapse.
You drill and invade into the bile
of my very core,
suck me into my own blood-waters,
where I turn upon myself in confusion.
I die a little each day.

You doubt
your need of me?
You think
you are in control?
You think
your intelligence is more powerful
than my wrath?
You err . . . you live in fantasy,
There IS a price to pay
for following your path.
Before I die, you will die.
I provide you life,
but I CAN take it away.
That is simply the way.
